Design, Build, Fly (DBF)

About the competition

Every year, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) hosts the Design, Build, Fly (DBF) competition, where students apply their theoretical knowledge of aircraft design to real-world challenges. Participants design, build, and fly their own aircraft, gaining hands-on experience in the full development cycle. The competition is open to all undergraduate and graduate students across all levels of study.

Who We Are?

Our Story

At the Aeronautical Engineering Department of the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), our undergraduate team takes on the exciting challenge of designing and building aircraft for the AIAA Design, Build, and Fly (DBF) competition every year. Through this hands-on experience, our members develop a wide range of advanced skills, including conceptual aircraft design, multidisciplinary optimization, aerodynamic and structural analysis, propulsion systems, composite layups, CAD modeling, UAV production, and remote-control flight. DBF is more than just a competition—it’s an opportunity for students to explore their passion for aeronautics, push the boundaries of innovation, and strengthen their technical, teamwork, and communication abilities.
